7 Best Low-Light House Plants That Will *THRIVE* In Your Dark Home

Okay, admit it. If you could fill every inch of your home with plants, you would. I mean, who doesn't want to live in a jungle? The problem with this is, well, space. The other problem with this is lighting.

What do we do with those corners in our homes that get absolutely no light?

You may be asking, "Mae, have you ever heard of photosynthesis?" Why yes my fellow planters, I have. But I'm telling you, these plants that I am about to share won't only mind the low-light destination you put them in, but they will LOVE you for it!

Let's cut to the chase with number one.

1. Snake Plant

We obviously have to start this list with the tried and true Snake Plant, also known as the Sansevieria Trifasciata. Beloved by many for its bold look and oh-so-easy care. Water this plant baby every 10-14 days, sit back and enjoy as you watch this beauty flourish in your "sun-allergic" corner.

2. Chinese Evergreen

The Chinese Evergreen is a true godsend to this earth. I mean, just look at those leaves! If you are looking for a plant that will make a statement, the Chinese Evergreen is the way to go. This beauty is perfect for the new plant parent because they are very flexible in their care. They don't require much humidity and also prefer low-light conditions. Just be careful not to overwater these guys because they don't love their roots sitting in a swamp. Let your Chinese Evergreen dry out a little between waterings. Follow these simple care tips and you're going to have yourself a happy, gorgeous plant!

3. ZZ Plant

The ZZ plant is another popular choice among houseplant enthusiasts, and for good reason. This plant is hearty and stunning. A ZZ plant’s scientific name is Zamioculcas Zamiifolia and can also be known as the Zanzibar Gem. These babies are native to South Africa and are very drought-tolerant so you only need to water them every 10-14 days. They sport these glossy, thick, gorgeous leaves that rarely brown and can also get really tall and wide, although they’re most likely going to grow slower in a darker area. You really need a ZZ plant in your collection, you won’t regret it!

4. Pothos

Pothos are our first vining plant on this list so far, and I’m not lying when I say that my home is filled with all different variations of these beauties. I have one sitting in my windowless bathroom, by my front door 20 feet from a window, and one even hanging in the bright indirect light of my window! These plants are so versatile and so gorgeous. One reason I love these guys is that they can GROW. They only need a little TLC but with this plant, you really can just sit back and enjoy as your pothos gets bigger than life.

5. Peace Lily

You really do get the best of both worlds with a Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) because not only do they give you these lush, green leaves, but they also give you these gorgeous flowers as well. Unlike the others on this list, the peace lily does love its water so be careful not to let this beauty dry out. They are also very prone to sunburn which makes them perfect for your low-light home! Please keep in mind that Peace Lilys are HIGHLY toxic to pets so if you have a cat that likes to chew on plants like it's their afternoon snack, I would steer clear of this guy.

6. Prayer Plant

Prayer plants, also known as Maranta Leuconeura (Maranta for short), have these unique and dramatic looks to them. I mean, don’t you want to just hug this plant? Just me? Okay. These gorgeous plants are tolerant of low light conditions but are slow growers so keep that in mind when deciding which plant to get. You want to keep these plants consistently watered because they don’t do well with drought. However, consider getting yourself well-draining soil because they’re also susceptible to root rot.

7. Monstera Deliciosa

We obviously have to end this list with the sensational Monstera Deliciosa (Swiss Cheese Plant). Famous for its lovely fenestrations and larger-than-life look. These plants have the capability to grow 10-15 feet fall and 8 feet wide so if you’re looking for a plant to fill a big empty space in your home, this is the beauty for you! Monsteras are also that is low-light tolerant and they’re simply a plant that you must have in your collection!
