8 Low-Maintenance Indoor Plants That Will Love Your Neglect

When it comes to house plants, there are usually two types of people: the “green thumb” and the “black thumb.” Both types of people love plants but the black thumbs can't seem to figure out how to keep some of these suckers alive.

On top of this, having an at-home jungle can be a bit overwhelming. Many of us don’t have tons of time every day to spend caring for our plant babies.

In this list, there are 8 plants that will help you to achieve your plant goals because they are some of the most low-maintenance indoor plants out there. I like to refer to these guys as the “love it and leave it" bunch because this group will THRIVE on neglect. In fact, some of the most common mistakes with these plants come from their owners having a heavy watering hand and accidentally overwatering.

Let's get started with number 1:

1. Jade Plant:

The Jade Plant is a succulent and therefore, it holds water in its leaves. This allows the Jade Tree to only need watering every 2 to 3 weeks. Lets the top 2 inches of soil dry out completely before watering again. Some signs that may indicate your Jade needs a bit more water are if the leaves start to drop, if they start looking shriveled, or if brown spots start to appear on the leaves. This gorgeous plant really likes bright-indirect light but if it is a mature plant, you can even stick it right in direct sunlight. Sit back and love this plant without needing to do much to it!

2. String of Hearts:

The String of Hearts (Ceropegia Woodii) is an absolutely beautiful and elegant plant. It gets its name from the heart-shaped leaves that grow on its purple stems. The String of Hearts is a trailing vine plant that is native to South Africa. They thrive in bright and indirect light. Be careful not to place them in bright direct light, or you risk burning their leaves. They will also not survive in low light conditions. Like the Jade Plant, String of Hearts store water in their leaves so they are very tolerant to dry conditions. In the summer months, water this baby once a week or when the soil is completely dry.

3. Ponytail Palm:

The Ponytail Palm is a fan favorite around here. I mean, just look at how hectic and gorgeous this guy is! The fun thing about the Ponytail Palm is instead of holding water in its leaves, it actually holds water in its massive trunk. Another fun fact about the Ponytail Palm is it’s not a palm, nor is it a tree. It is a member of the Agave family and it’s actually a succulent! These plants are incredibly low maintenance because, just like the ones before, this plant really likes to dry out before rewatering.

The Snake Plant comes in many different variations and they’re all a little bit funky in their own right! I can almost guarantee that in any article you look at for low-maintenance plants, a snake plant will be on that list. This is because they are one of the most versatile houseplants out there. You can put this guy in a windowless bathroom (with artificial lighting) or right next to your south-facing window and it will love each spot equally! You only need to water your snake plant when the soil gets nearly all the way dry, making this a really easy plant to care for.

5. Pilea Peperomioides:

The Pilea Peperomoides is also known as the Chinese Money Plant, and (my personal favorite) the UFO plant. This baby is so popular amount houseplant lovers because of how unique it is and, you guessed it, low maintenance! Unlike the other plants on this list so far, the Pilea Peperomoides actually likes to sit in fairly moist soil. However, It also likes to dry out for a couple of days before watering it again. This makes the Pilea easy to care for because, in the summer months, you only have to water it about once a week. Keep this guy in bright-indirect sunlight and it will be a happy plant!

6. Spider Plant:

The Spider plant is such a fun plant because of the little Spiderettes they produce. These Spiderettes are little offshoots of the plant and you can take them, propagate them, and turn them into even more Spider plants! The Spider plant’s needs are fairly simple and straightforward. They like their soil to be slightly moist but, like the Pilea Peperomoides, let the soil dry out slightly before watering again. As for lighting, these guys love bright-indirect light but can survive in low-medium lighting as well!

7. Parlor Palm:

The Parlor Palm is a great low-maintenance plant because it is fairly versatile. Despite what some may think, the Parlor Palm is actually considered a low-light houseplant. If you have a space in your home that is far from a window but want a plant to occupy it, the Parlor Palm is the way to go. These are considered low-maintenance houseplants because they are fairly delicate with overwatering. They like their soil moist but if it's too moist, you risk running into problems. Therefore, it is better to keep these guys on the dryer side.

8. Rubber Plant:

Last but not least, we have the Rubber plant (Ficus elastica). Another very popular pick amongst beginner and professional plant lovers. These plants can easily grow up to 10 feet tall and they have these beautiful waxy leaves which make them truly stand out in the crowd. These plants Love bright and indirect light. If placing them right next to a brightly lit window, adding some sheer curtains will help the plant not get too hot. They like their soil slightly moist so watering them about once a week will keep them happy and healthy!
